Our subscriptions reviewed:
Every decade or so, the Society finds that its income is not quite keeping
up with its outgoings and we need, therefore, to review our only income
source - our members' subscriptions. This is what our Executive Committee
has been doing for some months and its conclusions are now ready to
be put to our members. A Special General Meeting is needed for members
to consider the Executive Committe's proposals.
Special general Meeting:
Thursday 27 September at 8pm
before the Members' Meeting on Richmond Park

The Putney Debates - in October
One of the most
important and radical encounters in Britain's constitutional history
took place in St Mary's Church, Putney, in October 1647 - the Putney
Debates. A special week's celebration to mark the anniversary of this
historic event takes place at St Mary's in late October. Our October
Members' Meeting provides a preview of this celebration.
It is on Friday 5 October starting at 7.30pm.
Our speaker, Diane Purkiss, professor at Keble College, Oxford, and
the author of 'The English Civil War: A People's History', will talk
on the background to the Putney Debates. She will outline the ideas
which excited the Levellers, Diggers, Anabaptists, Parliamentarians
and Landowners - and talk of their leaders. The Civil War was a time
when ordinary men who fought and women who lived with tragedy found
their political voice for the first time - a voice so strongly heard
in St Mary's Church, Putney. This meeting is the Society's contribution
to the Wandsworth Arts Festival. All are welcome to attend.
