Cleaning up the Thames: the Tideway Tunnels Project

London's growing population, more frequent intense storms and fewer green spaces to soak up rain water, are all contributing to unprecedented levels of untreated sewage being discharged into the river: on average, about 32 million cubic metres of it a year. Putney's rowers and sailors know all about this! To tackle the problem, Thames Water is going ahead with the London Tideway Tunnels Project, set to make the river cleaner and healthier. The new tunnels, under the river, will start in west London and run to Beckton in east London. There are expected to be major construction works at the Barn Elms playing fields, at the mouth of Beverley Brook and at Putney Bridge etc. The Thames towpath may have to be closed. Our meeting will tell us all about the scheme. The speaker is Phil Stride, Head of London Tideway Tunnels, who will give an illustrated talk and answer questions. This meeting is for all Society members and friends.

End of an era: For fifty years, Society members have received the monthly Bulletin, with news of the Society's meetings and activities. Since the early 1970's, when he took over from Judge Ian Fife, John Horrocks has been the Bulletin Editor. After thirty-five years of producing a Bulletin every month (except for August), John feels he deserves a rest after 385 editions! He will, however, continue to play a full role in the Society and the current Chair and Executive Committee thank him sincerely for his extraordinary contribution as Editor. Philip Evison has agreed to become the new Editor and this is his first - of many we hope! (We should not overlook or underestimate the invaluable role of technically 'assembling' the bulletin, which was calmly and professionally done for many years by Angela Holman - whom we heartily thank - and now equally so, for the last few months, by Maritz Vandenberg).

Meet the Commons Conservators : This year, the Wimbledon and Putney Commons Conservators will be holding their Annual Open Meeting at St John the Baptist Church Hall, just off Kingston Hill, Kingston Vale, SW15 3PY. It's on Wednesday 10 June at 8.00pm. Everyone interested in the Commons is welcome to attend. The Conservators will try to answer all the questions raised at the meeting. For example, what about the recent concerns about groups of young people rollicking on Putney Lower Common at night, to the consternation of local residents? Any other issues you think should be raised?
