Climate change in London: What can be done?

Sea levels are rising by 3 cm each decade and with climate change accelerating - the most dramatic sign being the rapid disintegration of Arctic sea ice - ocean levels are set to rise much faster. This will affect us locally, since almost half our borough lies in the Thames flood plain, and the viability of a putative replacement for the Thames Barrier is the big question for the future. What effect will climate change have on London, and especially on our children and grandchildren? What do the government, Wandsworth Council, and the public utilities need to do in order to protect us? At this meeting, we will hear from Tony Bosworth, national climate campaigner at Friends of the Earth, on the big picture in the wake of the Copenhagen fiasco. Mandy King, who until recently was Wandsworth's Senior Policy Analyst (Sustainability), will talk about the Council's commitment to cutting its own carbon emissions. And Wandsworth Friends of the Earth will detail the suggestions it is making for the Council to take more ambitious action, including accepting its responsibility, like many other Councils, to encourage the whole community - business, public authorities and us householders and residents - to reduce our impact on climate change. There will be an extended Q&A session. Local Councillors are being invited, and we look forward to a lively discussion on the practical steps that can realistically be taken, particularly locally, to avert the dangerous consequences of global warming.
The meeting is open to all Society members and friends.
